JACKSON, Mississippi (AP) – Mueller will face Cleveland Central at South Jackson Field when he opens the high school football season in Mississippi on Friday.
And, as Clarion Leisure reported, it will be the first all-black female crew nationally.
“With all the information we have been able to gather from the National Federation of High School Associations, we feel this is the first time that a high school football game will have an all-female Black umpire,” said MHSAA Assistant Director. I’m here. Greg Freeman said. “I think this shows that we are not discriminating against anyone. I want you to work.”
Adrienne Barnes, who is part of the Mississippi crew entering its 19th year as a youth and high school sports host, said: “This is the first time we have all worked together on the field. There will never be a woman.”
Women from across the state make up crews for Muller’s clash with Cleveland Central, part of Week 1 of the Mississippi High School Athletic Association games. The women have had some preseason scrimmages ahead of Friday’s 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
MHSAA official Curtis Lowe said each party will return to their respective crews the following week.
Barnes said a challenge from her son forced her to participate in public affairs.
“He was six or seven and I was on the field fussing over referees,” she said. I bet you don’t.
Barnes said she began focusing on building an all-female crew last fall. Similar crews are working in Oregon and Texas.
MHSAA has nearly 50 women refereeing high school football games, Freeman said.
“They all work Friday nights,” Rowe said. “Don’t work with me. I decided to give them a chance. Seven women together.”
Barnes has worked with former MHSAA official and current NFL referee Sarah Thomas, who became the first woman to officiate a Super Bowl in 2021.
Barnes hopes Friday’s game will help open the door for female referees.
“I hope more women are invited to the bigger shows. I hope more minority women get the opportunity because even higher level women’s sports don’t see us very often. “It’s sad and lonely that there’s no one there who really understands where you are,” she said.
In addition to Barnes, Sarah Fleming, Sherry Vaughan, Fran Adams, Felicia Davis, Alona Alexander, Dominic Sutton, Clock Operator Phylicia Cotton, Constance Clarke, and Chain Crew Tamika Lipsey, Timika Morris and Charmaine Smith have joined the field. increase.
