Steve Carell and Domhnall Gleeson conducted extensive research on therapists and patients before embarking on the 10-episode FX series The Patient. However, they knew they couldn’t base their characters on other situations.
“You don’t do research,” explains Carell. “Because it’s so thin. I try to be as prepared as I can to make sure I arrive on day one. But when you’re there, it’s either in you to some degree, or it isn’t.
Gleason adds: There are many different kinds of people who kill people, but Sam was incredibly specific. “
In the series, Gleeson’s Sam Fortner is a serial killer. He takes his therapist (Carel’s Alan Strauss) hostage and reveals details about his past over the course of their relationship. bind to.
It was a challenge for the director of this film to make the one-room story cinematically interesting.
“It had a completely different look depending on the time of day and night,” director Chris Long said of the set.
For Carell, this was an interesting “what if” scenario.
“We were in it all day,” he says. “When I was chained, it was a real lock with a real key, and I wanted someone to think twice about getting me out of here if there was an earthquake or a fire. ” All of which added to the atmosphere of the space. “
Both actors never thought of ‘The Patient’ as a TV series or an extended film.
“Separating it in terms of form didn’t help me,” Gleason says.
As a result, “patients” have episodes of varying lengths. “There are days when you think, ‘It’s going to be a really heavy day because we’re going to have to go to a really dark place,'” Gleason says. “And you will go home having the best time.”
Gleason could walk around the room, but Karel couldn’t. That limited his options, but it also brought other perks. It provides fine dining.
That trait was designed to turn a serial killer into a “fulfilled” human being, says co-creator Joe Weisberg. “I never associate food with serial killers, so it seemed like a good thing.”
For the most part, Karel listened.
“I want them to think I can be a good therapist,” he says. “I like listening to people, and that is probably the most important aspect. , as someone asking you what might lead you to connect the dots and find and draw your own conclusions.
According to Weisberg, he and co-creator Joel Fields were “enthusiastic about exploring the idea of a serial killer who wants to be better, instead of being the crazy killer you normally think of. We had to do some research to find out if it was real or if it was just some silly thing we made up.
Both actors have said they had a great time making the series.
“One of the things I love about working with Domhnall is that he takes his job very seriously, but he doesn’t take it too seriously,” says Carell. “It’s, to me, the ideal combination. When the time comes to achieve what the two of you are trying to achieve, you will be of one mind and move towards it.
“There were moments of ridiculous frivolity between the scariest moments. But we talked to each other on that point, so I think we were very in tune.”
Gleason adds: “It was the perfect work experience for me.”
“The Patient” premieres on Hulu on Tuesday.
