GREEN BAY, Wis. — Coach Matt Raffler took a sinister tone after the Green Bay Packers’ new safety Darrin Levitt suffered a shoulder injury during the preseason opener in San Francisco.
“He’ll be out for a while,” Lafleur said.
Usually it’s a serious injury Lafleur. Perhaps Leavitt will make the starting 53-man roster before going on the disabled list to continue his recovery.
“Yeah, I think most people probably felt the same way in the building, to be honest. ‘He’s going to be out for a while,’ Levitt said when he returned to practice on Sunday.” I can’t live like that, you know what I mean?
It seems worth noting that he’s back, or at least he’s back. In the second half of the 49ers game on August 12, Levitt was forced to fumble with a wicked shot at Rayleigh McLeod. As Chris Barnes scooped up a loose ball, Levitt lay on the field, writhing in pain.
“Yeah, it hurt,” Levitt said with a smile. “It’s on tape. You can see how much I suffered.
Levitt has been in on-field rehab for the past week. On Sundays he had individual training. Leavitt was careful not to declare himself ready for week one. He wears his DonJoy Sully shoulder brace to limit his movement. He’s kept it to himself, but his comeback seems a bit of a test. what will he deal with one day? Can he handle some more next time?
This may be an apples-and-oranges comparison, but after a shoulder injury last year, Jaire Alexander returned to practice on Dec. 8 but hadn’t played in over six weeks.

After a long layoff, Leavitt said he felt like he was running on “fawn legs.”
“I’m still far from where I want to be,” he said. I know that every day I come here with the athletic training staff and try to do everything I can to be healthy.I am strong so I can go out and play. I can do it.”
When Levitt was released by the Raiders on July 20, the Packers swooped in. Last season he led the Raiders in special teams tackles. Instructed by Visacha. Leavitt and Bisaccia are close on and off the field. When Leavitt came to Green Bay to sign, he played with his family in Bisaccia.
Leavitt quickly became No. 1 in all four phases of Special Teams. That he could have been only his fifth safer was irrelevant to his potential role in curing Green Bay’s consistently terrible special team.
“When you’re with Aaron Rodgers on offense, the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end and you think you have to know what you’re doing,” Bisatcha said recently. “I think the hair on the back of my neck would be better off standing with Darin Levitt. You have to know what you’re doing and he’s going through that process.”
Levitt downplayed his potential importance to these units, but there’s no denying what he means as a proven performer who can serve as an extension of Bisatcha on the field.
“Special teams are very different from offense and defense,” Levitt said. “Think about it. If you run left and you have a hanging right corner, or a hanging right receiver, it doesn’t really affect play. I think if you miss an assignment or something like that, it can ruin the whole play, you just do 1 in 11. It’s not like I’m the most important in a special team unit, or other I don’t want to say I’m more important than any of them.
