PORT ANGELS — Neither heat nor smoke was a factor in this year’s Great Olympic Adventure Trail Race, which took place in the hills west of Port Angeles this weekend, as more than 300 people from 13 states and four countries raced. .
The GOAT Race is an endurance race sponsored by Peninsula Adventure Sports, running on both paved and unpaved routes along Kerry Ridge near Lake Crescent.
The weekend was warm with temperatures in the 80s and a bit smoky, but race director Lori Mittman said there were no reports of smoke problems. About 450 people participated in the day-long event.
Port Townsend’s John Mauro was the only local winner. Mauro won wave 2 of the half marathon with a best time of the day of 1:27:38.27. Mauro also won the Olympic Discovery He Marathon held at Port He Angels in June.
Wave 1 of the half marathon was won by Joshua Corbin of Silverdale with a time of 1:37.36.43.
Silverdale’s Arie Malenfant set the best time for the women in Wave 2 with a time of 1:43:17.56 and the best time overall. Women’s best in wave 1 Her finish was her 1:51:45.61 by Seattle’s Erica Swanson.
The most brutal event, the 50K (about 31 miles), was won by Seattle’s Christian Canham with a time of 3:49:55.26. The women’s best time was 4:43:45.77 by Ariel Knottson in Seattle. Knutsson was also fourth overall.
Seattle’s Sawyer Thomas won the marathon with a time of 3:32:20.95. Victoria of Danville, Calif. Her Tyler set her best women’s time in 3:50:07.56. Tyler finished fifth overall.
A total of 313 people entered and 286 finished. His two waves of half marathons have had his 183 finishers, 37 marathons and 66 50Ks.
Peninsula Adventure Sports also hosts the annual Big Heart, an endurance team race in four disciplines that combines mountain biking, kayaking, road cycling and running. Big Heart takes place in and around Port Angeles on his September 24th.
