For the past few years, there’s been a Six From Saturday note at the bottom of the Monday morning MMQB column. This year, each week will be published as a separate post. Here are my thoughts on college action this weekend, primarily geared towards what NFL fans should care about.
1) Although Alabama didn’t win the game, Will Anderson’s 4th quarter play for the Crimson Tide turned into Texas kicker Bert Auburn’s job (and hitting). What a great name for a man trying to beat). Nick Saban) made it that much harder on Saturday, pushing the go-ahead field goal to 49 yards where he was. Auburn dug it in and had Bama come back and answer with a game-winning field goal. But that shouldn’t keep you from going back and watching the play. No one picked up Anderson as the Saban defense highlighted Texas protection in the corner blitz, so he made a free run on the Hudson card. But a closer look reveals the obscene closing speed that the card thought it had time to throw it away or escape, and Anderson changed it in the blink of an eye. In fact, Anderson was the one who chased Quinn Ewers into the arms of Dallas Turner on the play that injured QB Quinn Ewers. If not April’s first pick, Anderson probably will.
2) Speaking of Ewers, he flashed his potential before going down in that game and did it against the Saban defense. He could throw the ball with total ease and seemed poised for him in a very big spot for the Longhorns. It’s arguably too early to draw any conclusions about what he’ll become as a professional player, but he’ll likely be draft eligible in 2024. Ewers was seen as very rough around the edges before moving from Ohio to Texas last December. But he had a tremendous tool in Austin. And, as was the case with Columbus (who left because he got stuck behind Heisman finalist CJ Stroud), Ewers would get a good environment to grow as a Longhorn.Tua as Bama’s offensive coordinator. – Tagovailoa and Mack Jones.
3) My good friend Chris Gasper pointed this out to me. I think it’s a good thing: Marshall, Appalachia and Georgia Southern dominated Notre Dame, Texas A&M and Nebraska respectively on Saturday. When the transfer portals first flooded, we thought it might have the opposite effect: players who popped early in the Group of 5 conference might move up. The team is initially stocked with players who were part of a larger program. App State QB Chase Brice is from his Clemson, Marshall QB Henry Colombi is from Texas Tech, and examples of players moving down to strengthen midfield rather than playing strings where they are There are many more. Ultimately, this is good for college football.
4) The only surprising thing about Scott Frost’s dismissal is what happened before his buyout dropped from $15 million to $7.5 million. , remains a legend in Nebraska. However, I would have been overwhelmed if I had been told that 2018 would unfold like this. Frost went an unsightly 10–26 with 16–31 in the Big Ten despite being in the much softer West Division. Nebraska’s lack of a natural recruiting footprint has certainly taken its toll in recent years. However, it is not without resources and traditions. Even if Husker can’t get back on track (which is unlikely), it should be able to overtake Minnesota and the Northwest of the world to join the conference. In two years he took UCF from 0–12 he was 13–0 Frost at least failed to do that, well, shocking. And Frost was intrigued by several NFL teams at one point.
5) While we’re there, it’s worth mentioning another college coach whose name was once hot. Iowa State’s Matt Campbell won a pretty big rivalry game on Saturday. Campbell set a good example of needing to strike while the iron is hot. He was on the doorstep of the Lions’ job a year and a half before him, but wanted to pull his name out of the running and come back for a really great group of seniors. now? With Matt Rule struggling and Urban Meyer crashing coming from the college ranks, there are fewer lines out there for him. Interestingly, it could leave him as replacement for Frost in Nebraska.
6) Jim Harbaugh’s Colin Kaepernick comparison the media made for him after Michigan announced he was going with real sophomore JJ McCarthy (2012 switch from Alex Smith) ) was interesting to hear.
