The FirstEnergy Akron Marathon, Half Marathon and Team Relay on September 24th will see thousands of runners trek through various Akron neighborhoods and landmarks.

- Akron Marathon 20th Anniversary and Blue Jean Bash: The event will take place on Thursday, September 22nd at 6:00 PM at the John S. Knight Center. The Blue Jean Bash is the largest fundraiser in marathon history with a goal of raising $400,000. Running celebrities Ari Ferrer, Meb Keflezighi, Bill Rogers and Kathryn Switzer will attend the event. Attendees can also look forward to live auctions, live entertainment, an open bar, interactive displays and more. Tickets start at $262.
- 20 years museumhealth and fitness expo: The exposition will be held at the John S. Knight Center on Friday, September 23, from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm.
- blue line celebration stage at the health and fitness expo: The stage takes place on Friday, September 23, from 11:00 am to 7:30 pm in the Main Exhibition Hall of the John S. Knight Center. The event will include speakers, celebrity runners, yoga classes and more. In the center of the exhibition hall is the Runner’s Lounge, where you can stretch, apply KT tape and relax before the big race.
- Ali on the Run Show at the health and fitness expo: One of America’s most popular sports podcasts is Ali on the Run Show, hosted by Ali Feller. At some point during the expo on Friday, September 23, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the John S. Knight Center, Ferrer will join running legends Kathryn Switzer, Bill Rogers and Meb in his Keflezighi. The course itself has also undergone some changes. This year’s half marathon participants will traverse a new, flatter course. The finish line has also moved back to the Akron Civic Theater, this time not at Rock 3, which hosts the Finishers Festival. The race he will start in six waves, the first wave at 7am and the last wave at 7:07am. All runners must cross the start line by 7:10am.

Significant changes have also been made to Marathon’s policies regarding COVID-19 vaccination and testing.

Despite all these differences, marathon racers will come across places like Stan Highwet Hall & Gardens and Sand Run Metro Park. Half his marathon participants experience parts of the course that include the North Hill and Firestone Park neighborhoods.
Hydration, energy gels and medical stations will be placed throughout the course, as will portable toilets for participants and bystanders. All runners and bystanders will also receive a 20th anniversary hat.

Runners can register online through September 18, and on-site registration will begin on Friday, September 23 at the Health & Fitness Expo, subject to availability. Volunteers can register online until September 20th.

Roads will be closed for the 2022 Akron Marathon
If you’re planning to go downtown on September 24th, or want to see how marathons or other events might affect your driving route, here’s an overview.
Friday, September 23 – Kids Fun Run
The Kids Fun Run departs at 6 PM in downtown Akron on Friday nights.
- South Main Street will be closed from 9am between Bowery Street and Booktel Street.
- South High Street between East Mill Street and East Market Street will be closed from 6:30 PM.
Saturday, September 24 – Akron Marathon Race Series
The streets along the race course aren’t the only boulevards closed for Saturday’s main event. Popular workout spots along The Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail and Sand Run Metro Park are flooded with racegoers.
This year’s route closes part of the Tow Pass Trail from Mastille Stores near downtown to North Portage Pass in the Merriman Valley. Shortly thereafter, the trail follows the Sand Run Parkway, through the Sand Run Metro Park, and onto the stretch Sand Run Road, which includes a frequently used jogging and walking trail. Now that the pedestrian routes have been covered, we’ll organize the road closures first by closure time and then by race course.
