Fulton – CNY Arts Center is pleased to announce auditions for its Christmas production, The Family Fruitcake, on Saturday, September 24, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Arts Center at 121 Cayuga Street in downtown Fulton. The play, written by Rebecca Frohling, runs December 9-18. The cast consists of 4 males, 5 females, and 11 children, including triplets.
The play centers on Laurie McKinnon, who wants everyone to have a normal Christmas, especially while her eldest son is not serving in the military. She scrambles around to make sure everything is in place for the impending arrival of her extended family, but her husband Jim and teenage daughter Kelsey are uninspired. Youngest daughter Emma wears full camouflage her makeup behind every post.
Laurie’s very pregnant sister arrives with a new husband who is lost in the family’s linen closet. Jim’s brother, his annoyed wife and her six children, and even neighborhood children arrive and add to the chaos. Aunt Bev doesn’t need to prompt Swenson to spin her fruitcake story, which was made almost 20 years ago. I’ve never had it, but it’s a family tradition at our Christmas table every year. The afternoon brings all the sights and sounds of chaotic family gatherings, from quarrels and tears to joy and reconciliation, but as long as there’s fruitcake, it will always be a regular McKinnon Christmas. No problem… right?
Executive Director Nancy Fox said: “I would love to see a theater family come out to audition. It is a great opportunity to share the stage and make new memories this Christmas. ‘s senior, we plan to cast 11 children.”
“We are also looking to increase our technical theater staff by recruiting stage managers, set decorators and prop handlers. We are always open to training new theater staff and building a strong program. has the opportunity for more and more people to participate, and some technical theater staff will receive scholarships.”
The play was written by the daughter of local Fulton guitarist Tom Laisley, who has worked with the Arts Center for many years.
“We have enjoyed Tom’s fingerstyle guitar at several events. “No wonder his daughter wrote a piece of art. I loved it the first time I read it and it seemed like the perfect time to premiere this play in our community. Working with the family on stage, We look forward to bringing this family comedy to life for the holiday season.”
