A few days later Sports Betting Officially Launches in Kansas Last week, dozens of people flocked to the Hollywood Casino to watch the Chiefs play the first game of the season.
The atmosphere was like any other sports bar, sitting at tables eating wings and drinking beer, but with one big difference. People would regularly leave their seats and place bets on the games.
Tanner Rohm, manager of sports betting at the casino, said he and his team wanted to create an experience for sports fans like those who come to watch a Chiefs game or a race at the nearby Kansas Speedway. He said he was working on improving it.
“We have a really nice lounge here,” Roma said. “40 or so TVs, lounge chairs, everything. If you go to the buffet in February (built next to the sportsbook room), it’s going to be a sports bar, so it’s going to be a sports fan frenzy.” Become.
That vibe is what John Robinson was hoping for. Until it was legalized in Kansas, Robinson traveled to Iowa to bet on the game. He said it makes watching games more exciting when he can bet during them.
“I just want to know what it feels like to watch a Chiefs game here,” he said. “You can bet throughout the game on who will score first, how many yards they will get, and so on. [Patrick] Mahomes can throw, so it can all be done live. ”
For many watching games today, the casino felt like an impromptu watch party involving new friends. Stephanie Fisher didn’t place the bet herself, but she came with her husband who did. She said her bets during her games became more interesting to her.
“We don’t know who we’re sitting with, but it was a lot of fun because everyone was just talking to each other,” she said.

Crowds betting on the Chiefs’ season opener formed long before the game actually started. The most common bet was the point spread based on the winning margin. A moneyline that adjusts payouts to pick a winner based on the size of the team’s popularity (or underdogs). Over Under bets on the number of points both teams will score.
“You can bet on anything that can have a positive outcome,” Rohm said. “So a lot of people are betting that Mahomes will pass over his yards or that certain running his back will be below or above his rushing yards.
Hollywood Casino is one of four casinos in the state that offer face-to-face sports gambling. Conveniently located right on the border, the casino attracts customers from Missouri, where sports betting is still illegal.
Matt Nelson is one Missouri resident who drove a short distance to gamble legally in Kansas.

For Nelson, betting on games is part of his pastime. To celebrate the first bet of the NFL season, he and his friends threw a viewing party at the casino. Nelson placed bets on nearly every game on his 45 different high-definition TVs dotted around the room.
“College football was a disaster yesterday, so I’m hoping to recover today,” Nelson said. “We let Mahomes throw a few touchdowns. [Travis] Kelse scored one to give the first touchdown scorer two men. ”
The Chiefs were the 6-point favorite in their game against the Arizona Cardinals. Nelson wagered a total of 53.5 points and he was also the winner when the Chiefs won by his score of 44-21.
