Eighteen-year-old Sam (Eva Nobrezada) has always been unlucky. Her key falls down a manhole. Her bike is punctured. She inadvertently locks herself in the bathroom. Her toast always lands jam side down. But perhaps her greatest misfortune is that she was never able to find her “forever family” and grew up in a summerland girl’s home. (This movie takes the cliché of killing her parents up a notch. Sam never had her parents at all!). Her Sam’s luck changes when she meets Bob (Simon Pegg), a talking black cat. Penny turns Sam’s life around. All of a sudden, she started stocking the shelves of her work at Flowers and More with a fuss. Her toaster works perfectly and you can even land her toast her jam side up. When Sam accidentally flushes a lucky penny down the toilet (what’s a kid’s movie without toilet humor?), she becomes desperate to find another penny, chasing her bob. Descend the secret portal to the Land of Fortune.plot of good luck Too dense and complicated. I suspect the intended audience for this film will not be able to stand it. And it’s too bad. Because Kiel Murray’s complex script has a positive message. The idea is that bad luck is just a mirror image of good luck, and that bad luck teaches us how to adapt and respond to what life brings. Some of Sam’s best experiences and friendships began with bad luck. Perhaps our bad experiences help us become who we are.Amy Amatangelo

Sometimes you meet guys who are really just guys with no visible special qualities that seem to work out based on their charisma alone.Writer-director star Cooper in her Rafe friendly her sophomore feature chacha real smooth, that man happens to be Andrew (Rafe), an attractive, disarmed recent Tulane graduate whose only motive is to earn enough money to join his Fulbright Scholar’s girlfriend in Barcelona. That’s it. Unfortunately, the only jobs he can get are as a minimum-wage cashier at his hometown’s unrelentingly named food court stand, crashing in his brother’s room, and working with his realist stepfather (Brad Garrett). Fighting and trying to convince his mother (Leslie Mann) that she likes men wrong and he likes women right. In this tortuous existence stumbles the opportunity of his life so far. While Andrew escorts his brother David (cute as a button Evan Assante) to a Bar Mitzvah bash, Andrew adds spice to the raucous dance floor and resident’s rumored bad mom, Domino I undertake to be friends with (Dakota Johnson) and her autistic daughter, Laura (genuine newcomer Vanessa Berghardt). He becomes very successful in both, and is hired by a mob of Jewish mothers as a party starter for the children’s Bunai Mitsubot, securing Domino’s affections in the process. In this indie, like so much before it, there’s nothing more appealing to a hot mom than a goofy, unfiltered young boy who treats his kid like royalty. Also in this indie, as in many before it, Judaism is used as a background and texture, but not at a level beyond visual symbolism. chacha real smoothRafe’s clever script, affable characters, and naturalistic direction don’t make you feel enough pain to sympathize with someone who can’t moonwalk but still skates past.Shayna Masi Warner

Popular modern YA fiction (at least the kind of fiction that tends to get enough mainstream attention to land a feature film or TV deal) is known for being extremely sad and deeply emotional. YA adaptations of movies often get an unfairly bad rap simply because they are. It’s normal to cry ugly, at least for readers. So consider this your warning in it the sky is everywhere It’s an emotional vehicle, one that frequently circumvents the line between sharp truth and painful saccharine. The two sisters were very close, and many of Renee’s plans for life after high school were based on the fact that the pair would do things together, from being roommates to attending Juilliard. To say she doesn’t know who she is without her sister is an understatement, and her sense of self is further shaken throughout the film by the revelation of some key secrets Bailey was keeping from her. Director Josephine Decker was able to find an unexpected and beautiful way to visually express Lenny’s emotional state. the sky is everywhere is filled with weird and surprising imagery that includes everything from over-the-top color riots to claustrophobic to almost horror-like darkness. Amidst the rain of broken furniture, Baker makes a number of interesting choices that add color and depth to an otherwise fairly simple and straightforward story. the sky is everywhere As such, it puts a fresh twist on an age-old topic and brings a much-loved book to life. —Lacey Bauer Millas

Joel Coen, defined by radical minimalism Tragedy of Macbeth The undeniable director flex. Alongside a cast of well-known actors, Cohen helms the film’s slick, sparse black-and-white visuals, producing a final product full of artistic determination, but stripped of anything like madness or mania. The film’s highly stylized aesthetic, coupled with its unfortunately restrained performances, transforms. Macbeth Too boring tragedy. Little need to summarize, Tragedy of Macbeth Follows the eponymous, ruthless Scottish general (Denzel Washington) and his woman (Francis McDormand) in the wake of a jarring prophecy.Cohen’s Macbeth Washington and McDormand typically occupy roles played by younger actors, and the film’s contrast of milky whites and dense blacks complements its otherwise barren landscape. Macbeth Aside from a visually adaptive soundstage and time-tested actors, there are no clear innovation differences. The austere imagery, combined with the terribly understated performances from the film’s leads, indicate an inability to capture the excessive descent into madness. It’s a mania that has been put down proactively by SSRIs. McDormand’s intent to portray Lady Macbeth as eerily taciturn provides a limiting rigidity. Washington’s Macbeth, on the other hand, is somewhat compelling in his dreadfulness, but ultimately feels misplaced. Tragedy of Macbeth Nevertheless, a well-executed adaptation. The film’s staging and cinematography are clever and compelling. The theater people involved are definitely talented. It’s competently helmed by one of the most influential directors currently working in Hollywood, and unfortunately the standards set by his Coen efforts to date have been so high that these All the successful components of are meaningless.Joel Coen Macbeth It lacks risk, ingenuity, and most importantly rewards. For those seeking a safe and satisfying rendition of a lean Shakespearean tragedy, this latest execution will suffice. —Natalia Keegan
