Olympic Sports Roundup: Men's Golf Breaks Record Weekend

ASU Volleyball traveled to Waco, Texas, home of the Baylor University Bears, for the Baylor Invitational last weekend.

ASU kicked off the tournament on September 9 against the University of Evansville. The Sun Devils took advantage of a fresh start to dominate the game and in sets he won 3-0.

Sophomore middle blocker Andy Clayling led the game with eight kills and five blocks. Junior outside hitter Marta Levinska also had eight kills and finished the game with two blocks.

ASU quickly moved on to their next game against Colorado State. The ASU won his first game against the Rams, 25-15. Levinska controlled the set with kill accuracy.

The Sun Devils struggled in the second set against CSU. ASU ended up with a close win over CSU, but got off to a slow start at the start of the set. The Sun Devils gained momentum by attacking his players such as Levinska, Kryling and senior outside his hitter Iman Isanovic. The final score in the set was 26-24 for him.

The third set of the match was very close, but the Sun Devils lost 25-22. Isanovic, Kreiling, Leviska, and his sophomore outfielder Geli Cyr continued to attack at the net, allowing the Sun Devils to catch up with CSU. Midway through the set, CSU took the lead and maintained it on offense and service record.

The fourth set against CSU was tough for the Sun Devils. The final score was 25-17 and they lost to ASU.

ASU entered the final set with a 2-2 draw and ultimately lost 15-9. The Rams took the lead early in the set and continued through the rest of the match. ASU couldn’t get enough momentum to beat the Rams and lost 3-2.

ASU played the No. 15 Baylor Bears at Baylor’s home stadium on Saturday. The Sun Devils led the first set with a four-point streak, thanks to some errors from the Bears. The Bears eventually overcame a slow start to take over the set and clinch a 25–16 victory.

The second set was a fresh start for the Sun Devils as the team started with a three-point streak. The Sun Devils lost momentum and allowed the Bears to take a pointstreak of their own.

The Sun Devils had their sights set on winning the third set, but were unable to do so. The Sun Devils started slowly and quickly found themselves falling behind. Cyr’s run gave ASU some momentum late in the set, but the Sun Devils couldn’t keep up and lost 25-17. The Bears won his 3–0 victory.

The Sun Devils are gearing up for the Red Raider Classic on Friday, September 16th at 10am MST at Texas Tech University.

History was made last weekend when the men’s golf team finished with the lowest three-round tournament score in program history with an 800 (271-257-272). ASU finished his 2022 Maui His Gym His Intercollegiate second to Auburn with his exceptional 12-under performance by veteran and senior Riggs Johnston.

Freshman standout Michael Misaces showed his impressive potential with a 4-under par 72 performance to win his Sun Devil debut. Returning sophomore Kiko Coelho also narrowly missed the top 10 with a 4-under.

A remarkable weekend was filled with records and highlight moments, but the spotlight fell on senior Gabe Salvanella. Salvanera said he finished 7-under 63 on Saturday, the fourth-lowest round in program history. Overall team his card was ASU’s best yet.

Former Sun Devil superstar David Puig announced Monday that he is moving to LIV Golf. He’s heading to Chicago this week to prepare for his first professional event.

Arizona State University’s next stop is the Fighting Illini Invitational, September 16-18 at Olympia Field, Illinois.
